ESPLANTAS CASTLE
ESPLANTAS CASTLE
Saugues - 43170
13th, 16th and 18th centuries
In a very strong position, atop a granite hillock overlooking the Sanjeev basin, Esplantas Castle was built by Odilon de Mercœur, Bishop of Mende (1247-1274) in order to protect the southern flank of possessions Saugaines.
The keep of cylindrical shape, derived from the mistresses towers erected by Philippe Auguste, dates from 1252 as evidenced by the dendrochronological analysis of a girder oak remained in place. The logis that partly envelops the keep, on a polygonal plan, has been revamped in the 16th and 18th centuries.
The Castle has been the subject of important restoration work. Saved from ruin, it could be so open to visitors.
