Cathedral Notre-Dame - de - L'Annonciation du Puy-en-Velay was elevated to a Basilica minor by brief of Pius IX, February 11, 1856. A Black Madonna, subject of numerous pilgrimages over the centuries, enthroned on a baroque high altar.
