Cathedral Notre-Dame - de - L'Annonciation du Puy-en-Velay was elevated to a Basilica minor by brief of Pius IX, February 11, 1856. A Black Madonna, subject of numerous pilgrimages over the centuries, enthroned on a baroque high altar. The current portrait replaces that would have offered by St. Louis on his return from the crusade to Egypt, and who was burned during the French Revolution.
